Der AH-64 Apache ist ein schwerer zweimotoriger Kampfhubschrauber (Attack Helicopter · AH),
der vor allem von der United States Army eingesetzt wird. Der Apache wurde vom US-amerikanischen
Unternehmen Hughes Aircraft entwickelt und wird heute von Boeing produziert. Der AH-64 wird auch als
GUNSHIP (engl. für Kanonenboot/bewaffnetes Fluggerät) bezeichnet, weil er speziell als schwer bewaffneter
Kampfhubschrauber konzipiert wurde, um feindliche Bodenziele – insbesondere Panzer – mit hoher Feuerkraft
zu bekämpfen. Seit 1982 wird der AH-64 in Serie produziert, wobei die erste Maschine erst im Januar 1984
an die US Army ausgeliefert wurde. Der Erstflug des Prototyps fand bereits am 30. September 1975 statt.
Seinen ersten richtigen Kampfeinsatz hatte der AH-64 im Dezember 1989 während der US-Invasion in Panama,
bekannt als Operation Just Cause. Später spielte der AH-64 wesentliche Rollen im Zweiten Golfkrieg, bei der
Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan und im Irakkrieg.
